Passenger Vehicle Crash Data Retrieval

Overview

What Is an Event Data Recorder (EDR)?

What Is an Event Data Recorder (EDR)?

Modern passenger vehicles are equipped with Event Data Recorders (EDRs) that capture critical technical information in the moments before, during, and after a crash. These systems provide an objective and reliable source of evidence that supports accurate crash investigation, reconstruction, and claim evaluation.

EDA-LLC provides professional Bosch Crash Data Retrieval (CDR) services for passenger vehicles using industry-standard tools and established best practices. All data retrieval is performed in a manner that preserves data integrity, accuracy, and legal defensibility.

What Is an Event Data Recorder (EDR)?

An Event Data Recorder (EDR) is an electronic component integrated into nearly every modern passenger vehicle sold in the United States. In most vehicles, the EDR is a function of the Airbag Control Module (ACM).

EDRs do not continuously record vehicle activity. Instead, they:

  • Record data only when specific crash-related thresholds are met
  • Capture data for a short time window (typically seconds)
  • Store raw vehicle sensor and system data (no audio or video)

EDRs are often referred to as a vehicle’s “black box” and have become a critical source of unbiased information as vehicle technology has advanced. According to federal safety data, more than 99% of new passenger vehicles are equipped with EDRs.

What Data Can Be Retrieved?

Federal regulations (49 CFR Part 563) require that EDRs record certain minimum data elements when present. The specific parameters recorded vary by vehicle manufacturer, model, and year.

Commonly retrieved data may include:

  • Vehicle speed
  • Change in velocity (Delta-V)
  • Brake application
  • Accelerator pedal position
  • Steering input
  • Seat belt status
  • Airbag deployment information
  • Ignition cycle data

This information provides objective insight into vehicle behavior and driver inputs leading up to a crash.
